offices are on one of the higher floors of a contemporary office
building in Dallas' bustling Uptown district.
Yet
few people have demonstrated as great a commitment to preserving
and renovating architecturally significant structures from the past
as that of Richard H. Collins.
Collins
has concentrated much of historic preservation energy in the historic
East Texas town of Jefferson,
once known as the "Riverport to the Southwest". There,
he has acquired and renovated some 25 distressed historically residential
and commercial structures. He founded the Collins Academy to provide
honor classes for area students in a 1962 furniture store that has
been renovated to complement the historic atmosphere of Victorian
Jefferson.
The crown jewel of Collins' passion for historic preservation is
the exquisite museum tour home and bed and breakfast in Jefferson,
Texas, called The
House of the Seasons. Built in 1872, the house is an
outstanding example of the architectural style that was a bridge
between the Greek Revival and Victorian styles popular during the
late 19th century.
Collins has also helped stimulate others to undertake meaningful
preservation projects. As chairman of two East Texas banks, he has
offered two-percent-interest loans to those seeking to restore architecturally
important homes and businesses in the region.
